AIIMS Nagpur to start Crisis Centre for rape survivors, Covid autopsy

All India Institute Of Medical Science (AIIMS) Nagpur is planning to start a 'One Stop Crisis Centre' (OSCC) for survivors of sexual assaults, and it will offer services such as medical examination, treatment and psycho-social counselling to the survivors. AIIMS Nagpur is also planning to provide a minimum of 24 hours accommodation and legal help to the survivors of sexual assaults.

Reportedly, such cases would be attended on a priority basis at AIIMS Nagpur to ensure the medico-legal evidence is collected without delay. The medical institution will have a special ward for such cases and the medical examination will be conducted in the presence of experts.

Fool-proof methods would be adopted to ensure that the evidence is collected as per protocol and norms of the ministry of health and family welfare, as reported by TOI.

AIIMS Nagpur is developing a multi-faceted clinical forensic response unit that will have round the clock experts at the emergency wards to treat the ante-mortem cases including rape and other offences of sexual violence.

Covid Autopsy

The institute is also planning a special segment in the under-construction mortuary for 'Covid autopsy' or the post mortems in highly communicable or infectious diseases to boost study and research under the supervision of AIIMS Nagpur Director Maj General Dr Vibha Dutta.

The autopsy centre will have a DNA profiling and fingerprinting unit, facilities for digital autopsy, anthropological and forensic laboratories.

The autopsy table would be made with special negative suction technology. The facility would help in developing knowledge on the effects of Covid and other such communicable diseases on various organs.
