Focusing on the improvement of health and hygiene of adolescent girls studying in government schools and colleges, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on October 6 launched the 'Swechha' programme. Under this initiative, the government has decided to provide quality sanitary napkins free of cost to these girls.
Quoting a report, the CM said that approximately 23 per cent of the young girls in this country stay away from attending schools and colleges during menstruation. To change these circumstances, the state government earlier took steps to improve toilets in all government institutions under the Nadu-Nedu initiative and now it is bringing the Swechha programme, the minister said during the launch of the initiative.
Under this initiative, female teachers, ANMS and female police officers will be directed to spread awareness on menstruation among the girls studying between Classes 7 to 12, once every month. Awareness on the same will also be made available on Disha App and Disha Act by women police officers. Joint Collector (Aasara) will be monitoring the orientation programmes while a women teacher will be appointed as a nodal officer, according to an official release.
"The State government will be providing quality sanitary napkins to over 10 lakh students studying between 7-12 classes at a cost of Rs 32 crore, where each student will be receiving 120 napkins every year," it said.
Techniques of disposing of the sanitary pads properly will also be taught to the students. The government has also provided separate dustbins and 6,417 incinerators under Clean Andhra Pradesh (CLAP) programme. Reddy said the government initiated Nadu-Nedu and revamped all the toilets in 56,703 schools and hostels by making running water facilities available.
