Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) hosted a National Symposium on “Plant Pathology: Sustainable Approaches for Food Security and Human Health.” The annual meeting of the Indian Society of Plant Pathologists (INSOPP) was held by the Department of Plant Pathology, PAU, at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) on December 8 and 9.
Over 300 scientists hailing from India, Nepal, Mexico, and Russia were active participants. They engaged in discussions covering diverse subjects such as biosafety, epidemiology, nanotechnology, upcoming technological research voids, the role of artificial intelligence in diagnosing and managing plant diseases. The university noted, "The experts also explored legal matters pertinent to governmental bodies in a session fostering collaboration among scientists, industry, and farmers."
PS Sandhu, the head of the Department of Plant Pathology at PAU, provided details about the event's comprehensive structure. He mentioned that the event comprised a total of six technical sessions, each featuring four plenary lectures, along with an additional seven lead lectures and 19 invited lectures. Moreover, the event accommodated 40 oral presentations and an impressive count of 78 poster presentations, showcasing a rich array of insights and research contributions across various formats and topics.
TR Sharma, deputy director general (crop science), ministry of agriculture and farmers’ welfare, New Delhi, while inaugurating the symposium, urged the scientists to develop technologies that ensure food security in environmentally sustainable manner.
On the occasion, “Dr TS Thind Distinguished Plant Pathologist Award” was conferred upon Jayanta Tarafdar, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, West Bengal, for his valuable contribution to plant virology.
