As COVID cases spike, IIEST Shibpur asks students to leave campus

Amid rising COVID cases across the country, the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) Shibpur has asked students to leave the campus and go home immediately as it would not be safe for them to stay in hostels.

A circular released by the institute read, “Students staying in halls/hostels may be asked to leave as soon as possible. However, if any student is not able to return home, he or she will have to submit consent from his or her parents. Such boarders...shall not be allowed to go outside the campus (except for medical purpose) without the permission of the chief warden.” 

Offline academic activities put on hold 

The institute has also notified that all offline academic activities shall be kept on hold. However, scholars/final year students, who have recently joined the laboratory, may visit for urgent activities with prior permission of the supervisor and the head of the department/school/centre maintaining all COVID-19 protocols. 

The institute said all canteens and shops may continue at 50 per cent capacity that that too up to 10 pm. The service providers shall arrange regular sanitisation and cleaning. All alumni meetings may be postponed and guest house bookings, except booking for institute guests, may be cancelled. 

Meanwhile, 67 students at the Madras Institute of Technology, one of the four autonomous constituent colleges of Anna University, in Chromepet, Chennai, have tested positive for the COVID-19 infection. Most of the students are either asymptomatic or have mild symptoms. More than 50 persons, including students and a faculty member, have tested positive for COVID-19 at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati since December 31, 2021. IIT Kharagpur has also reported 60 COVID cases. Out of them, 40 are students and researchers.
