Assam Floods: Cachar district administration closes all educational institutions

In wake of the flood situation in Assam, the Cachar district administration has closed all educational institutions and non-essential private establishments for 48 hours in the district.

Through an order released by the office of Deputy Commissioner Cachar district disaster management authority, the administration has closed all the government and private educational institutions for two days till May 20, 2022.

The official notification reads, "In pursuance of the powers conferred upon me under Section 30(2)(xi)& Section 34 (h) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, I, Smti, Keerthi Jalli, IAS Cachar in view of the ongoing floods in Cachar District do hereby direct the at all Educational Institutions (govt or Private) and non-essential private establishments of the Cochar District shall remain closed for the next 48 hours."

"This order shall be effective from 6:00 am of MAy 19, 2022 and will remain in force for next 48 hours," added the notification.

Heavy rains continue in Assam

The state has been experiencing torrential rainfall and landslides for a few days which affected the roads, railways tracks and communication lines in many parts of the state. Reportedly 26 districts are affected.

As per reports by Assam State Disaster Management Authority, "a total of 96,697 people have been affected alone in the Cachar district followed by 88,420 people affected in Hojai, 58,975 in Nagaon, 56,960 in Darrang, 39,874 in Biswanath and 22,526 in Udalguri district," as reported by Hindustan Times.

Indian Army has launched the rescue operations.
