The event brought together more than 150 principals from various CBSE schools across the Delhi NCR, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Rajasthan, providing a vital platform to address the growing concerns about substance abuse among youth and encouraging collective action.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), in collaboration with DAV Public School, Uppal's Southend, Sector-49, Gurugram, recently organized a significant workshop focused on Drug and Substance Abuse Awareness. The event brought together more than 150 principals from various CBSE schools across the Delhi NCR, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Rajasthan, providing a vital platform to address the growing concerns about substance abuse among youth and encouraging collective action.

The workshop was inaugurated by Ajay Kumar (IAS), Deputy Commissioner of Gurugram. During his address, he underscored the importance of early intervention in tackling substance abuse. He called for a unified effort involving schools, parents, law enforcement, and community organizations to address the root causes of drug abuse and ensure the well-being of the younger generation.

Expert Panel Discusses Key Issues on Substance Abuse

The workshop featured an expert panel that provided valuable insights on various aspects of substance abuse prevention and intervention:

  • Dr Anees Cheekunath, IRS, Deputy Director, Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Delhi, focused on the role of law enforcement in curbing drug use and outlined practical measures schools can adopt to stay vigilant.
  • Pankhuri Kumar, SP, Haryana State Narcotics Control Bureau, Gurugram, emphasized early identification of substance abuse and the need for collaboration between schools and the community.
  • Professor (Dr) Arvind Kumar, Chairman of Chest Surgery at Medanta - The Medicity and Founder Trustee of the Lung Care Foundation, shared alarming data on the health risks associated with substance abuse, particularly the impact of E-cigarettes on the respiratory health of youth under 18.
  • Shanti Krishnamurthy and Satish Kumar from Chinmaya International Residential School, Coimbatore, contributed to the discussion by highlighting the importance of open dialogue about substance abuse and the wide-reaching impacts of drug use.

A Unified Approach to Address Substance Abuse

During the workshop, Charu Maini, Principal of DAV Public School, expressed her gratitude towards the CBSE, Gurugram administration, the Health Department, and the Narcotics Control Bureau for their collaborative efforts. She emphasized that combating substance abuse requires a coordinated approach from all stakeholders, including educators, parents, and authorities.

Empowering Educators to Combat Substance Abuse

The workshop included interactive sessions on practical strategies for identifying and addressing substance abuse in schools. Participants were engaged in discussions on preventive measures, health education, and the importance of community involvement in tackling the issue. The sessions were designed to equip educators with the necessary tools and knowledge to create a safer, drug-free environment for students.

Collective Pledge for a Drug-Free School Environment

At the conclusion of the workshop, all participants took a collective pledge to work toward creating drug-free school environments, symbolizing a major step in empowering educators to combat substance abuse effectively.
