Coronavirus: Andhra Pradesh closes all educational institutions

To prevent and contain the spread of coronavirus, the Andhra Pradesh government decided to shut down all educational institutions across the state. The decision was taken on Wednesday. The government has ordered all colleges, schools, universities and coaching centres to close from Thursday. Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, analysed the situation with officials of education and health departments. Thereafter, he decided to declare holidays for educational institutions in line with the Centre’s course of action.

According to official sources, initially, the holidays would be till March 31. Thereafter, the government would review the situation further and take a suitable decision. On Wednesday, the annual public examinations for the students of intermediate finished. However, the Class 10 exams are scheduled to commence on March 31. Taking into account the rural and urban local bodies elections, the Class 10 exams were postponed by Andhra Pradesh board until March 31 earlier this month. According to some sources, the government would take a final call on the Class 10 exams after further assessment of the situation arising out of coronavirus pandemic. 

So far, only one positive case of COVID-19 has been reported in the state on March 12. In Nellore, a person who returned from was diagnosed with the deadly disease. At present, the person is under medical observation. Nilam Sawhney, Chief Secretary, assessed the measures being taken to evade the spread of the coronavirus infection.
