Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren made the announcement while addressing a state-level workshop of school management committees (SMCs) of the upcoming 80 utkrist vidyalayas (school of excellence).
Jharkhand government is planning to set up more than 4000 model schools or schools of excellence in next couple of years. Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren made the announcement while addressing a state-level workshop of school management committees (SMCs) of the upcoming 80 utkrist vidyalayas (school of excellence). The first such SMC conclave was organised at Tana Bhagat indoor stadium in Khelgaon, Ranchi.
In the first phase, 80 schools of excellence across 24 districts are waiting to begin operation from the next academic year. Soren said, “The state has around 36,000 government schools but I often fail to understand the reason behind poor quality of education so far. Not that our kids aren’t talented but they are devoid of proper guidance, opportunity and platform. Still, not many can afford private education in a poor state like Jharkhand. Therefore, the education department is working on war footing to revive the ailing school education sector in a planned manner through various initiatives.”
The workshop was attended by SMCs of the 80 school of excellence, students, teachers, parents and education department officials. State school education and literacy department secretary K Ravi Kumar said all the 80 utkrist schools developed in the first phase are in sync with modern requirements. “From the upcoming academic session, we are going to start these schools on CBSE pattern. They will be English medium schools,” he said, adding besides formal education, these schools will also have mandatory vocational courses in four to five disciplines.
Explaining the road map for developing school of excellence, Kiran Kumari Passi, director of the Jharkhand Education Project Council (JEPC) said, “In last one year, the department worked on war footing to ready these schools and now they are gearing up to begin classes from KG to XII. The schools have modern classes equipped with IT labs, playgrounds and libraries, among others. This apart, we have provided capacity building training to principals and teachers from professional institutions like IIM Ranchi, & Ahmedabad.”
