Rising Water Levels Cause Distress in North Kerala
Heavy rains have caused significant disruptions across North Kerala, with rising river water levels leading to distressing conditions. In Kozhikode, many areas have been affected since Monday morning, with the Chembukadavu Bridge submerged and tribal families in Chembukadavu facing danger. Residents in Kaithappoyil have also been trapped in their homes.
Wayanad and Dam Conditions Under Scrutiny
Wayanad’s Mundakai region is experiencing heavy rainfall, increasing inflow to the Banasura Sagar Dam. Authorities have warned that a red alert will be issued if the water level rises by 15 cm, though current conditions suggest no imminent risk of waterlogging even if the dam’s shutters are opened. The landslide accident has taken down approximately 150 people, and the death toll is continuously on the rise.
Idukki's Dam Conditions and Rainfall Impact
Idukki district has seen intensified rainfall, prompting the opening of shutters at Mattupetti, Kallarkutty, and Pabla dams. While the amount of water discharged has been reduced, there remains a potential for increased water release if levels continue to rise. The Idukki Dam currently holds a water level of 2,360 feet, while the Mullaperiyar Dam’s level is at 130 feet.
Thiruvananthapuram Also Affected
Thiruvananthapuram has been experiencing heavy rains and strong winds intermittently throughout the day, adding to the overall impact of the severe weather conditions across the state.
