Retirement age increased for IIM Directors: Centre

Earlier, the retirement age for IIM directors was 65 years. The notice also informed that the minimum age limit to apply for the post has also been dropped by the authority.

IIM Director Retirement Age Increased: The Centre has revised the retirement age for the directors of India’s prestigious chain of b-schools, i.e. Indian Institute of Management (IIM). According to an official notification released by the Education Ministry, the Centr has raised the retirement age for IIM directors to 70 years. Earlier, the retirement age for IIM directors was 65 years. The notice also informed that the minimum age limit to apply for the post has also been dropped by the authority.

Minimum age limit for applicants dropped

The official notice released by the education has dropped a provision in the original IIM rules that informed, “The age of applicant for the post of director shall not be more than 60 years as on the first day of January of the year of advertisement for the post.”

The notification further added that IIM directors — normally appointed for five years — will hold office through their tenure or until they attain the age of 70, whichever is earlier.

There had been many demands to bring change in the retirement age for IIM directors. It was being demanded that the retirement age for the directors of IIMs must be brought on a par with that for IIT directors and central university vice-chancellors, who are allowed to work until the age of 70. The age of applicants is preferably less than 60 for the directors of the Indian Institute of Technology. However, for the Vice-Chancellors of Central University, the minimum age limit for applicants is preferably less than 65 but there’s no hard and fast limit.
