The move comes after an inquiry was sought into the inclusion of the 'Scheduled Tribe Muslim’ category by the University of Calicut during its ongoing admission process for PG courses.
Calicut University has clarified that it has not included any new reservation category for Muslim students from Lakshadweep and blamed the controversy on the backend team that handles the web portal. The move comes after an inquiry was sought into the inclusion of the 'Scheduled Tribe Muslim’ category by the University of Calicut during its ongoing admission process for PG courses.
Later, Binoj Sebastian, University's admission director, informed that it has been labeled for the domicile-based Lakshadweep quota by mistake and had now been corrected.
Calicut University has two undergraduate seats in each department and one seat each in every postgraduate course offered on its campus and at all its affiliated colleges for all those students who are from Lakshadweep. Though those students who belong to Lakshadweep are classified as Scheduled Tribe, Calicut University gives them a separate quota over and above the Other Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and other quotas.
P. Rasheed Ahammed, United Democratic Front-aligned Syndicate member, told the Hindu, that there is nothing called “ST Muslim” and it should be found out on whose directions such category was created.
“There’s a lurking danger in such a classification, whatever may be the excuse. The reservation for students from Lakshadweep is not based on their religion. I know people (from Lakshadweep) who don’t follow any religion or are Hindus or Buddhists. Such a classification could give rise to friction between communities since ‘ST-Muslim’ could be misconstrued as Muslims grabbing seats meant for other communities,” he said.
