Centre gives nod for three new medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh

The Centre has given go-ahead for three new medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh, as informed by Health Minister in the Parliament.

The Central government is all geared up to increase the number of medical colleges in India. The latest is, Centre has given nod for three medical colleges to set up in Andhra Pradesh.

Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar, Union minister for health and family welfare said in the Rajya Sabha that the Central government has approved for setting three more medical colleges at Machilipatnam in Krishna, Paderu in Visakhapatnam, and Pidiguralla in Guntur district.

The Health Minister said that these upcoming medical colleges are approved under the centrally sponsored scheme for establishing new medical colleges attached with referral or district hospitals. Hence, these colleges will be sponsored by the Centre through the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

She informed this while replying to the question by YSR Congress member V Vijayasai Reddy, who asked for the current status of 16 medical colleges being built by the Andhra Pradesh government, as reported by TOI.

Dr Bharati said to Vijayasai Reddy that the Central government has also approved the up-gradation of existing medical colleges under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) that include Government Medical College at Anantapur, Siddhartha Medical College in Vijayawada and Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences at Tirupati with additional infrastructure and facilities under the PMSSY.

Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had reiterated, during his visit to Uttar Pradesh, his government's intent to have at least one medical college at each district level. Moreover, Union Health Minister Dr Mansukha Mandaviya stated in the Lok Sabha that the government is upgrading government medical colleges and establishing new AIIMS (All India Institute Of Medical Science) to provide quality and affordable health care services to the people of India.
