CMC Vellore, Tamil Nadu, reports over 200 Covid-19 cases

Christian Medical College (CMC) Hospital in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, has become the Covid-19 cluster after it has reported more than 200 Covid-19 cases.

While Tamil Nadu has intensified Covid-19 induced restrictions till January 31, the Christian Medical College (CMC) Hospital in Vellore has emerged out to be a cluster after 200 of its medical staff are found to be Covid-19 positive including doctors and nurses.

As per reports, the hospital has temporarily stopped online booking for non-emergency treatments and surgeries, and outpatient (OP) visits. Only emergency services are provided in the hospital. On Friday, Vellore Corporation categorised Babu Rao street near CMC as a containment zone after six persons from the street are found to be Covid-19 positive.

A CMC official has told TNIE, “Given the strength of the staff, these are negligible cases. If a staff or patient shows symptoms, they are tested, quarantined and sent to the hospital or home-isolated based on the severity of the case. An exclusive Covid ward has been set up. Though we have a high number of cases, the need for ICUs is less.”

On Monday, the state reported over 62,700 active Covid-19 cases. Chief Minister Stalin has urged the people to get fully vaccinated at the earliest and strictly follow the Covid-19 guidelines.

Fresh Covid-19 restrictions in Tamil Nadu include night curfew from 10 pm to 5 am and total lockdown on January 16. All places of worship will be closed for the public from January 14 to January 18, and only 75% occupancy in outstation buses are allowed that operate ahead of the Pongal festival.
