Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) supporters staged a protest against the amendments made to the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016, at the Kalina campus of the Mumbai University. The ABVP agitation is the part of a month-long campaign, which is being held in colleges and universities across the state. The ABVP is also holding signature drives to build up public opinion against the amendments.
In December 2021, the Maharashtra legislative assembly had passed the Maharashtra Public Universities Act (Amendment) bill that gives more power to the higher and technical education minister with respect to the running of state-run universities. This move is being opposed by the BJP, which claims that it will lead to political interference in institutions of higher education and undermine the role of the governor.
Mumbai University has meanwhile announced that it will hold exams in online mode for all the traditional courses. The University also announced that it will conduct the exams for the professional courses including Engineering, Law, Pharmacy in offline mode.
It must be noted that the varsity will be conducting the offline exams after two year. Though the varsity has released a notification for the summer exam, it is yet to take a decision on the final semester exams for all undergraduate traditional courses. As per the official notice issued by the varsity, the offline exam in Mumbai University will have both Multiple-choice questions (MCQ) and descriptive questions.
This time, the university has decided to conduct exams for all professional courses, including engineering, MCA and pharmacy, in the offline mode.
