“The school has been renamed to honour Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh, notable AMU alumnus, Indian freedom fighter, journalist, social reformer, writer, revolutionary and President in the Provisional Government of India, which served as the Indian Government in exile during World War I from Kabul in 1915," AMU informed.
The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) City School is now Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh AMU City School. According to the latest announcement made by the university on social media, “The school has been renamed to honour Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh, notable AMU alumnus, Indian freedom fighter, journalist, social reformer, writer, revolutionary and President in the Provisional Government of India, which served as the Indian Government in exile during World War I from Kabul in 1915.”
Talking about the renaming of the school, Abdul Hamid, AMU Registrar said, “The decision to rename the school was taken in the light of resolution number 28 of the ordinary meeting of the Executive Council held on March 22, 2021.”
Commenting on the decision to rename AMU City School, AMU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor said: “With the renaming, AMU pays tribute to Raja Mahendra Pratap, who attended the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College in Aligarh, which later became the Aligarh Muslim University. Raja Mahendra Pratap’s name is counted among the prominent alumni of the university. His father and grandfather were close to the educationist and reformer Sir Syed Ahmad Khan”.
Meanwhile, the nominees to the executive council of the university have also been appointed by President RamNath Kovind. According to the official statement released by the University, Professor Fazul Rahaman (Director, UGC Human Resource Development Centre, Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad), Professor Umesh Kadam (Centre for Historical Studies, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi) and Professor Geeta Singh (Centre for Professional Development in Higher Education, Delhi University, New Delhi), have been chosen as the nominees.
