COVID-19: WB educational institutions to contribute for State Government's Relief Fund

Educational Institutions in West Bengal has pledged to contribute to the State Emergency Relief Fund and support the government to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

Many premier universities, colleges, and educational institutions around the state have come forward to contribute to the West Bengal State Emergency Relief Fund, to help the government in its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. 

On March 27, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has urged different organizations, individuals, and educational institutions to make their contribution to the fund. Soon after the announcement, the Calcutta University, Jadavpur University, and St Xavier’s University expressed their desire to donate to the fund.

Sonali Chakraborty Banerjee, Vice-Chancellor, Calcutta University, has said that she is in talks with the Pro-VC and registrar to assist the government by contributing a fairly substantial amount to the relief fund. However, she did not disclose the amount. 

Chakraborty further stated that this contribution will be entirely from the varsity authorities and we are trying to raise funds from all stakeholders of the university including students, faculty, and staff. They are free to contribute whatever amount they want to. The amount raised from this will be donated to the relief fund.

In order to be on the side of the state and general public too, to fight COVID-19 in every possible way, we will be making contributions in through these two initiatives, the VC added.

Suranjan Das, Vice-Chancellor, Jadavpur University said that we have appealed all the teachers, officers and employees to contribute to the Chief Ministers Relief Fund to combat coronavirus threat.

The teaching and non-teaching staff of St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous) and St Xavier’s Collegiate School have also donated their one day's salary for the cause.
