Goa is all set to become the first state in the country to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 recommendations at the tertiary general education level. From the academic session 2023-24, students who will enroll in BA, BSc, BCom or any other equivalent general education undergraduate programmes will be allowed to pursue a four-year degree programme as against the current three-year degree programme.

The changes were approved by the varsity during the recent academic council meeting. Also, unlike the present three-year degree programme, the new four-year format will not be rigid and is expected to have flexible and multiple options for entry and exit.

Meanwhile, Goa University has been directed by the state government to allow its students to learn and write exams in local languages like Konkani and Marathi, even if the course is offered in English medium. The request, made almost a month back, will be deliberated during the University’s Academic Council meeting scheduled in the first week of May.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has written to all the universities across the country to allow their students to write exams in local or regional languages. The decision has been taken to support the teaching-learning process in the local languages. Goa University Registrar V S Nadkarni said that "even before the UGC could write, the varsity had received a similar request from the State government."
