"As alumni, we condemn the administration's regressive steps and call on the administration to immediately cease these harmful practices and engage in meaningful dialogue with the community to address their grievance," they said in the statement. They further urged the IISER-BPR to recognise the importance of creating an environment that fosters free expression, critical thinking and respect for diversity.
The Alumni Society of IISER Berhampur along with 47 other alumni signatories has sent a statement of solidarity to all faculties, and senior administrative staff against the authoritarian actions of the administration and the unpleasant situation faced by the current students at the institute.
"The imposition of a dress code, seizure of merchandise, dissolution of the literary club, denial of the formation of queer society and imposition of vegetarianism are indicative of more profound issues such as patriarchy, sexism, queerphobia, moral policing and disregard for individual choice. These actions are antithetical to the principles of a public university and should have no place in our institution," the statement added.
Showing their support to the student movement's demands for greater transparency, accountability and justice, the alumni group said that they were with them in their fight for a more equitable and inclusive campus culture.
