Amid the intensifying protest over the death of a first-year student at Jadavpur University due to alleged ragging, the University reconstituted the anti-ragging panel and the Governor held a meeting and assured that the university's Vice Chancellor will be appointed soon.
After the death of a first-year student of Jadavpur University who fell from the hostel building, the authorities of North Bengal University reconstituted the institution’s anti-ragging committee on Monday.
“The anti-ragging committee has been reconstituted for a period of two years. The acting vice-chancellor is its chairman. An anti-ragging squad will work under the supervision of the committee,” said a source, as reported by Telegraph India.
“Members of the squad shall educate students across the varsity about the menace of ragging and related provisions of punishment,” the source added.
Governor CV Ananda Bose on Thursday convened a meeting of court members of the university at Raj Bhavan. Bose as Governor is the chancellor of all the state universities, including JU.
“The Governor assured that he will be appointing a vice-chancellor for the university soon. During the discussion, JU faculty members pitched a proposal that security arrangements can be handed over to ex-servicemen,” said a source, as reported by Indian Express.
Talking to reporters after the meeting, JU’s computer science department head Nandini Mukhopadhyay said, “We do not have a permanent vice-chancellor. Several posts are also vacant. There were discussions about quick recruitment and security safeguards.”
National Human Right Commission (NHRC) recently issued notices to the Jadavpur University registrar and the West Bengal government in this matter.
