The lab’s mission is to provide a research and development ecosystem for next-generation technologies designed to improve safety, sustainability, energy efficiency, sanitation, and overall quality of life in densifying cities.

A Living Lab has been set up at the International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIITH) in collaboration with the European Business and Technology Centre and the Amsterdam Innovation Arena (AIA) with support from the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the state government. The aim is to help startups gather real-time data on urban infrastructure.

According to an IIIT-H blog, the Living Lab is using the 70-plus acres of the institute, along with its 4,000 occupants, research labs and 250 startups as a test bed for research and experimentation of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions for smart cities.  The ‘life’ at the lab sees the server getting updated every 15 seconds with information on air quality parameters. Similar is the case with other parameters on water management, energy consumption and weather conditions, all of which are under continuous surveillance.

As per a report published in Telangana Today, the water quality is measured by tracking the turbidity and pH levels among other parameters every four hours. As for forecasting weather, a range of advanced devices are installed across the IIITH campus to capture data on wind speed, direction, air temperature, humidity and rainfall. The Living Lab also collects data from conventional energy sources such as electricity consumed via lights, fans and other typical electrical appliances, as well as from solar energy to monitor energy.

The Living Lab is also collaborating with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore’s India Urban Data Exchange (IUDX) programme for seamless data exchange between IIITH’s data monitoring systems and data consumers across the country, the report added.
