More than 100 teachers of Panjab University (PU) met the Vice-Chancellor (VC), Professor Raj Kumar and urged him to take all the required actions for converting the varsity into a Central University. Teachers articulated their two core demands before the VC, including implementation of the seventh pay scale for PU teachers and enhancement of their retirement age from 60 years to 65 years.

While speaking to the media, Professor Manu Sharma said that the varsity has been combating a perennial financial crisis and this issue could be settled only if it becomes Central University.

Dr Parveen Goyal, a Senate member, argued that with the conversion of the PU into a Central University, all the stakeholders like students, teachers, non-teaching employees, the general public and others will get benefitted. Dr Naresh Mehndia highlighted that the now was the golden opportunity to convert the PU into a Central University.

Dr Priyatosh Sharma stressed that with the conversion of the PU into a Central University students will get a lot of benefits like more scholarships, fees will get deducted, laboratories will be modernised, teachers will get pay scales on time, and their retirement age will also increase and the university will get more funds.

Meanwhile, the central government has given nod to pension portability for employees who had joined the varsity both before or after January 2004. Now, employees, who had pensionable posts in their previous organisation, will be covered under the old pension scheme, as per a recent amendment notified in the Panjab University Employees (Pension) Regulations, 1991.
