UGC team visits Jadavpur University to assess anti-ragging measures

Weeks after a student died in the Jadavpur University, UGC team visited the Jadavpur University in Kolkata on Monday to take stock of the steps taken to prevent ragging on campus.

UGC team will also visit the main boys' hostel where the first year undergraduate student died on August 10, as reported by Telegraph India.

The four member team of UGC would oversee the infrastructure available on campus to prevent occurrences like ragging, and undertake discussions with varsity officials and other stakeholders, said the officiating JU's Vice Chancellor Buddhadeb Sau.

The UGC team asked the university whether the anti-ragging norms were being implemented, and if they could submit a response to them as soon as possible.

"There are already CCTV cameras on campus, and more will be installed at strategic locations. The work order has already been issued," he said, adding that the specifics will be communicated with the UGC team. In an interim report sent to the UGC last week, the university’s internal committee probing the death stated that the minor was ragged.

The team has reportedly expressed its dissatisfaction over the fact that the university does not have an anti-ragging monitoring cell.  Education minister Bratya Basu said on Monday, “UGC team can always come for such a fact-finding exercise. Our department also sent a fact-finding team last week. The vice-chancellor handpicked by the governor must be able to answer their queries”.
