With the rise in COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra, the state government has announced that it has decided to shut down all non-agricultural, technical, deemed, or private Universities and their affiliated colleges until February 15. The state government also directed all the colleges and universities to shut down the hostels to avoid the spread of COVID-19 and its variant Omicron.
“Amid rising COVID cases, Maharashtra govt to discontinue physical classes in colleges, universities till February 15. All exams in the said institutions are to be conducted online till February 15,” Maharashtra Higher and Technical Education Minister Uday Samant announced.

On Wednesday, the state reported 26,538 new COVID cases. The surge is mostly coming from Mumbai, which reported 15,166 new cases, which is nearly 50 per cent more than previous day. Mumbai also recorded 100 new cases of Omicron.

While higher educational institutions in the state have been directed to be closed, no announcement has been made so far regarding schools from the school education minister. However, on Monday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced that all schools in the Mumbai and Greater Mumbai Municipal areas will remain closed until January 31, 2021. As per the official notification, the classes for all the students studying in Classes 1 to 9 and Class 11 will be immediately shifted online until further notice. However, the offline classes will continue for students who will be appearing for the SSC, HSC or Class 10 and 12 Board Exams 2022.

Earlier, in December, Maharashtra School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad had said that if the situation arises, the government will shut down all schools in the state.
