Kerala government has finally decided to shut schools amid the ongoing pandemic situation. Considering the increasing number of novel coronavirus cases, the government of Kerala has announced its decision to close schools with immediate effect until further orders. Kerala schools have been closed for Classes 1 to 9. While offline classes have been suspended, the government has directed schools to continue the online classes in order to curb academic losses. However, offline classes would continue for classes 10 to 12.

The state government of Kerala conducted a review meeting today, on January 14, 2022, chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. In the meeting, it was decided that students of Classes 1 to 9 would have to resume online classes.

Meanwhile, the government has directed schools as well to release notification regarding the closure in order to inform their respective students. Since the order has already been issued by the state government, schools would now draft their own SOPs and share them with students.

Meanwhile, the process to vaccinate a maximum number of children between the age group of 15 to 18 is been accelerated by the health department of Kerala. The government has stated that it is important for this age group to be vaccinated as this population is vulnerable and schools have not been entirely closed.

Following this discussion, the proposal to set up COVID-19 vaccination camps in schools has also been released by the health department. This step would ease the vaccination process and protect the children from getting infected. It is expected that the government would release official orders regarding the closure of schools soon.
