Delhi EWS Admissions 2022

Delhi EWS Admissions 2022: The Delhi government had extended the last date for EWS admissions in entry-level classes up to June 24. Earlier, the government extended the deadline up to June 14. Parents and guardians must note that the application window for Delhi EWS admission will close today, June 24. “The last date for reporting by successful candidates of EWS and DG category in entry-level classes is once again been extended up to June 24,” Yogesh Pal Singh, Deputy Director of Education, said.

The National Capital commenced admission to entry-level classes in private schools in the city under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS), Disadvantaged Group (DG) and Children with Special Needs (CWSN) categories on March 29.

According to provisions of the Right to Education Act, 25 per cent of seats in entry-level classes, i.e. nursery, KG or Class 1 in private schools are reserved for students from EWS, DG and CWSN categories.

Under the EWS category, admissions are provided to children whose annual family income is less than `1 lakh, the DG category includes SC, ST, OBC, non-creamy layer, orphans, transgender and children living with or affected by HIV.

On May 31, the Delhi government received directions from the Delhi High Court to ensure that the backlog of unfilled seats for EWS sections in 132 schools is filled up in the next five years, in addition to the mandated 25 per cent reservation. The Delhi government earlier told the court that 132 schools prima facie have been found to be in violation of its directions regarding the admission of students in the EWS category.

Meanwhile, seeking legal remedy against private schools for allegedly denying admission to children under the Economically Weaker Section/Disadvantaged (EWS/DG) quota, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has written to the Delhi chief secretary.

In the letter, NCPCR chairperson Priyank Kanoongo stated that around 18,000 children have not been provided admission in Delhi under the EWS category even after allotment by DoE in the past two years. In addition, only 33,000 seats have been allotted in 2022-23 in lieu of 40,000 seats for 2021-22. Evidently, 7,000 seats are yet to be allotted in the current academic year. The number is substantially ghastly.
