The Centre, Delhi and other neighbouring states received an ultimatum of 24 hours from the top court to take action against the rising pollution and control the same in the National Capital Region.
Delhi Schools Closed Again: All schools in Delhi will be closed from tomorrow, i.e. December 3 until further orders. The decision to close the schools again has been taken due to current air pollution levels in the city, Environment Minister Gopal Rai informed. The minister made the announcement after Supreme Court criticized the Delhi government’s decision to reopen schools. The Centre, Delhi and other neighbouring states received an ultimatum of 24 hours from the top court to take action against the rising pollution and control the same in the National Capital Region.
Air quality in Delhi faced a major depreciation post-Diwali. On November 13, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced the closure of schools for a week to protect students from breathing the polluted air. The closure was extended beyond one week as the air quality in the city did not improve.
However, on November 24, despite recording ‘very poor’ air quality, the government allowed the reopening of schools for offline classes. The decision received a mixed reaction from the parents. On December 2, the apex court of India criticized the measures taken by the Delhi government to control pollution expressed its dissatisfaction toward the same. Pollution levels have increased in Delhi despite the state government claims, the top court claimed.
Expressing that students of primary classes are going to schools and adults are working from home, the court stated that the government must take good measures against pollution increase. It further warned the government stating, “If you don't take action we will take strict action tomorrow. We are giving you 24 hours.”
