PM Modi today distributed scholarships to school-going children affected by COVID-19

Children who lost their parents due to coronavirus will be provided financial support through PM Cares. Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched the PM-CARES for Children Scheme.

While launching the scheme, PM Modi said that if someone needs an education loan for professional courses, for higher education, then PM-CARES will help in that too.

Prime Minister said that financial assistance will be provided to children who have lost their parents due to COVID-19. Modi also announced that for other daily needs, arrangements have also been made for Rs 4000 every month for them under other schemes.

PM Modi said: “PM CARES for Children, All of you are making a small effort to reduce the difficulties of such corona affected children, whose mother and father both are no more. PM CARES for children is also a reflection of the fact that every countryman is with you with the utmost sensitivity.”

The government of India announced the initiative last year on May 29 to support children who lost parents, legal guardians, adoptive parents or surviving parents to COVID-19 from March 11, 2020, to February 28, 2022. As per the scheme, free education will be provided in nearest Government schools, KGBVs, NSCBs and JNVs, with provision of textbooks and uniform in Government schools, school fee reimbursement in private schools as per RTE norms.

The Prime Minister today transferred scholarships to school-going children. Bank passbooks and health cards under Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana were also handed over to children.

The objective of the scheme is to ensure comprehensive care and protection of children in a sustained manner by providing them boarding and lodging, empowering them through education and scholarships, and equipping them for self-sufficient existence with the financial support of Rs 10 lakh on attaining 23 years of age and ensuring their well-being through health insurance.

Prime Minister's Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM CARES Fund) was launched in March 2020, following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in India. The fund was created to deal with containment and relief efforts against the coronavirus outbreak and similar pandemic like situations in the future. Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, is the chairman of the fund.

While announcing the scheme for children Modi said: “This fund also helped a lot in preparing hospitals, buying ventilators, setting up oxygen plants during the Corona period. Because of this many lives could be saved, the future of many families could be saved.”
