2022 degrees awarded at IIT Roorkee 22nd convocation ceremony

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan virtually attended the convocation ceremony as the chief guest. He said IIT Roorkee should create a plan on how to utilise the great opportunity of G-20.  

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee organised its 22nd annual convocation ceremony today (April 6, 2023). A total of 2022 degrees, comprising 1005 undergraduate, 638 postgraduate and 379 PhD, were awarded to students. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan virtually attended the convocation ceremony as the chief guest. 

Prof KK Pant, Director, IIT Roorkee, welcomed the degree recipients and others and presented his annual report highlighting the achievements of the institute. After Covid, this was the first physical convocation ceremony. Family members of the awardees were also present at the convocation. 

Prof Apurbba Kumar Sharma, Dean of Academic Affairs, presented the doctoral degree recipients and the awardees of various medals and merit certificates who excelled in their specialisations. In contrast, the respective heads presented the candidates to the Chairperson, Senate for distribution of the degrees, medals, and prizes. 

Prof KK Pant, Director, IIT Roorkee, said, "Reflecting upon the role of an institution in shaping future leaders and the evolving higher education sector in India, IIT Roorkee's goal is to encourage graduates to continue learning and to be ready for the constant changes and disruptions happening in the world by contributing to the national growth story.” 

President Gold Medal was awarded to Leshna Balara from BTech (Computer Science and Engineering). Institute Silver Medal was presented to Nikhil Choudhary from Btech (Electronics and Communication Engineering). The Institute Bronze Medal and Director’s Gold Medal was given to Suraj K S from BTech (Computer Science and Engineering). The President of India Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal was presented to Mahek Raina from BTech (Mechanical Engineering). AK Goel Green Energy Prize and Gold Medal was awarded to Pragya Gupta, PhD, Department of Polymer and Process Engineering.  

While congratulating the graduating students, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said, “IIT Roorkee has witnessed India’s freedom struggle and has been a leading institution in independent India’s growth story. And in this Amrit Kaal, IIT Roorkee and all the graduating students must ensure a developed nation by 2047. It is a century of knowledge and under India’s presidency, the G-20 theme being – “One Earth, One Family, One Future” based on millennium-old understanding and values of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam; IIT Roorkee and its students, faculty and alumni must create a plan on how they want to utilise the great opportunity of G-20.”
