6 new universities to come up in Gujarat

In a recently held Gujarat Assembly, three new bills - Birsa Munda Tribal University Bill, Gujarat Organic Agricultural University Bill and Gujarat Private Universities (Amendment) Bill - were passed, thus, giving way to 6 new universities in the state. This includes four private and two government-run universities.

To be established in at Rajpipla in Narmada district, the Tribal University will offer tribal arts, culture, tourism, forest-based economic activities, languages and medicinal system courses. Though admissions will be open for students across categories, the preference will be given to tribal students for admissions.

The agricultural university will likely be set up in Gandhinagar. Speaking on the kind of programmes the University will offer, Agriculture Minister Chimanbhai Saparia said, “Despite a huge demand for organic farm products, farmers and other stakeholders don't have enough knowledge about production processes, techniques, pest management. This university would offer comprehensive solutions, learning tools and education to train the future generations in this emerging field”.

Besides the above mentioned state-run universities, Gujarat will also get four new private universities. These include:

  1. Swarnim Startup and Innovation University - Gandhinagar
  2. P P Savani University - Surat
  3. Indrashil University - Dholera, Ahmedabad
  4. Karnavati University -  Gandhinagar

With the addition, the number of private universities in the state will go up to 25.
