AICTE Declares 2025 as the "Year of Artificial Intelligence" to Revolutionize Indian Higher Education
This initiative is set to impact over 14,000 AICTE-approved institutions and 40 million students nationwide.
The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has designated 2025 as the "Year of Artificial Intelligence (AI)," aiming to transform India's higher education landscape and bolster its position as a global leader in AI innovation. This initiative is set to impact over 14,000 AICTE-approved institutions and 40 million students nationwide.
The technical education regulator, AICTE has called upon institutions to adopt an official pledge to establish India as a "Vishwa Guru" in AI. The pledge emphasizes innovation, ethics, and education, urging institutions to:
Introduce interdisciplinary AI courses and research programs.
Foster innovation and ethical practices in AI applications.
Prepare students for AI-driven industries.
Institutions are encouraged to hold formal ceremonies for adopting this pledge and prominently display it on campuses and in external communications.
Comprehensive Integration of AI
The council has outlined a robust plan to weave AI into the higher education ecosystem, including:
Establishing AI laboratories aligned with industry standards.
Promoting AI awareness through campaigns like “AI for All: The Future Begins Here,” featuring workshops, hackathons, and career counseling programs.
Launching AI Student Chapters to drive grassroots innovation.
Faculty Development and Industry Collaboration
To equip educators, AICTE will organize workshops and certification programs for faculty upskilling in AI. Partnerships with industry leaders such as Adobe, CISCO, and IBM will ensure hands-on learning opportunities through internships and projects, bridging the gap between academia and industry.
Recognizing Excellence
AICTE plans to honor top-performing institutions as models of AI excellence, highlighting their efforts in integrating AI into education and research.
Submission of AI Implementation Plans
Institutions are urged to submit their AI implementation plans by December 31, 2024, to the AICTE Approval Bureau. The best submissions will serve as benchmarks for others.
Chairman AICTE, Prof. T.G. Sitharam, remarked: "As we dedicate 2025 as the Year of Artificial Intelligence, we aim to shape a future-ready workforce. Together, we can position India as a global leader in AI innovation and education, driving self-reliance and prosperity."
