BITS Pilani permits one-year gap for students to build startups

The institute has also allowed faculty members to take up to a year off to start their own company. They can either take sabbatical or extraordinary leave or earned leave to avial of the facility.

Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, will allow its students and faculty members to take a year off to build their own ventures. 

As per a report published in Money Control, the students were sent a policy document in which it was mentioned that in case any student wants to take a year off to pursue entrepreneurship on a full-time basis, his/her application would be approved by the Dean of the University.

Twitter users have been appreciating the move ever since the institute took the decision. One user wrote, “BITS Pilani students can now take a year off from college and work on their startups. Lessgoo!!!, while another tweeted, “BITS Pilani has allowed students to take a year off from college to build their startups. Wonderful initiative! More such colleges are needed. Would give a breathing space to the students to let their creativity out.” 

Course credits for working on innovative prototypes  

Besides, the document also allows students, who are pursuing entrepreneurial ventures, to use their address in the institute to register their company with due permission. The facility is available to students whose firms have been funded and incubated by PIEDS (Pilani Innovationand Entrepreneurship Development Society). 

The policy document also mentioned that students may also earn course credits for working on innovative prototypes and business models. Apart from students, the policy also allows faculty to take up to a year off to start their own company. They can avail either a sabbatical or an extraordinary leave or an earned leave for a maximum period of one year.
