The Scientific Aptitude Assessment Exercise under CSIR’s JIGYASA program was conducted online, with students gathering at 37 CSIR constituent laboratories to participate in a large-scale scientific demonstration and experiment. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Souvik Maiti, Director of CSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (CSIR-IGIB), Delhi, who welcomed the online participants and expressed gratitude for their enthusiastic participation during his inaugural address.
Dr. Beena Pillai, Chief Scientist at CSIR-IGIB, introduced the participants to the event's theme. Highlighting the contributions of Dr. Mitali Mukerji, a former Chief Scientist at CSIR-IGIB known for her pioneering work in human genomics and personalized medicine, Dr. Pillai emphasized the significance of DNA, genomics, and molecular biology in transforming sectors like agriculture, healthcare, and beyond.
Students gathered to perform DNA isolation experiments were provided with isolation kits and guided through the protocol by Dr. Arya Sidharthan. She conducted a practical demonstration of the DNA isolation process, after which approximately 550 students successfully extracted DNA from their saliva.
Dr. Geeta Vani Rayasam, Outstanding Scientist and Head of CSIR-Human Resource Development Group (HRDG), expressed her gratitude to Dr. Souvik Maiti and the IGIB team for organising the event. In her address, she highlighted CSIR's pivotal role not only in advancing scientific technologies but also in fostering human resource development aimed at cultivating a scientific temper in the country. She emphasized CSIR's efforts in effective science communication to reach the general public. Dr. Rayasam encouraged students to think critically, explore beyond textbooks, and actively engage in extracurricular activities.
Dr. Suman Ray, Principal Scientist, Shri C. B. Singh, Chief Scientist, and Ms. Pratibha organized the event at CSIR-NIScPR, where students from Kendriya Vidyalaya, Gole Market, along with their teachers, assembled at the SV Marg campus of CSIR-NIScPR.
