The Ibrahimpatnam police said, “In our preliminary inquiry, we found that Vamshi was facing some issues in a relationship with a girl due to which he might have come under depression and attempted suicide.” The police had earlier registered a case  under Section 309 (attempt to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code and altered the registration to CrPC 74 for further inquiry.

Several incidents of suicides by engineering students have been reported in the past months. The recent case is of IIT Kharagpur where the semi-decomposed body a third-year BTech student from Assam, Faizan Ahmed, was found in his hostel room on October 14. His father had moved the Calcutta High Court demanding a probe by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) or a Special Investigation Team (SIT) after which the Calcutta High Court directed the police to submit a report on the investigation into the death of Faizan Ahmed. Justice Rajasekhar Mantha has asked the police to produce the case diary on the next date of the hearing. Directing the superintendent of police (SP) of Paschim Medinipur to submit a report on the investigation being done in the matter, the court also asked him to depute a senior officer to oversee the probe into the death of Ahmed. The court also ordered a viscera test of the preserved body samples of the deceased.
