Interested students willing to apply for IIT Madras 12-week free Robotics course may follow the steps given below:

Step 1: Go to the official website, https://onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in/

Step 2: On the homepage, click on the tab that reads, “IIT Madras Introduction to robotics”

Step 3: The link will be directed to the course page.

Step 4: Go through the details mentioned on the webpage carefully.

Step 5: Click on the tab that reads, “Join”.

Step 6: Login/ Sign up webpage will open.

Step 7: New users may sign up with their verified credentials

Step 8: Login to join the course

IIT Madras FREE Robotics course: Important dates

  • Start date – July 25, 2022
  • End date – October 14, 2022
  • Exam date – October 30, 2022
  • Enrolment ends – August 1, 2022

IIT Madras Robotics programme aims at providing an understanding of mechanical, electrical, and computer science aspects of robotics. The programme will act like a bridge course for undergraduate or graduate students from various disciplines to get a basic understanding of robotics. While the IIT provides the course upon free enrollment, if any student wants a certificate, they have to register and write the exam conducted in person at any of the designated exam centers. The optional fee for the examination is INR 1,000. Certificates will be rewarded based on the participant’s performance in the exam, as well as their average assignment score.

Week 1: Introduction to robotics- History, growth; Robot applications- Manufacturing industry, defense, rehabilitation, medical etc., Laws of Robotics

Week 2: Robot mechanisms; Kinematics- coordinate transformations, DH parameters

Week 3: Forward kinematics, Inverse Kinematics

Week 4: Jacobians, Statics, Trajectory Planning

Week 5: Actuators (electrical)- DC motors, BLDC servo motors

Week 6: Sensors, sensor integration

Week 7: Control – PWM, joint motion control, feedback control

Week 8: Computed torque control

Week 9: Perception, Localisation and mapping

Week 10: Probabilistic robotics, Path planning, BFS; DFS; Dijkstra; A-star; D-star; Voronoi; Potential Field; Hybrid approaches

Week 11: Simultaneous Localization and Mapping

Week 12: Introduction to Reinforcement Learning
