IIIT Hyderabad celebrates 21st convocation

The International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT-H) conducted the 21st convocation ceremony on Saturday. The graduation ceremony recorded the largest batch in the institute’s history, i.e. 556 students graduating. The institute also awarded a record number of 22 PhDs and 133 Masters with thesis. According to the institute, over 28% of graduates – 155 out of 556 – earned their degrees based on a high-quality thesis. In fact, the 2022 batch is the first batch to graduate based on the new academic curriculum that was revised and implemented in 2018. They received IIIT-H’s dual degrees, Master of Science and PhD degrees.

Recognizing the outstanding academic performance of Jivitesh Jain, BTech Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), IIIT-H awarded a gold medal. Jain scored a perfect 10 CGPA, a first in the history of the institute. Tanvi Karandikar (BTech in CSE) and Madhukar Dwivedi (Master of Science in CSE by Research) were awarded best all-rounders for their notable contributions in academics, extra-curricular activities and IIIT-H services.

Congratulating the graduating students, professor P J Narayanan, Director, IIIT-H said, “Our students’ world was turned upside down in March 2020 by the global pandemic. The bachelors and masters students did most of the heavy courses in online mode, without interactions with classmates and teachers that enrich the academic experience. This is perhaps the most resilient batch to graduate from the institute.”

Professor Alison Noble, from the University of Oxford graced the ceremony as the chief guest. Congratulating the graduating students, the professor said, “Training in interdisciplinary fields and skills is better and helps in the long run,” encouraging them to take up interdisciplinary options in their future. This year’s graduation was special for the students as 2020 and 2021 graduates were also invited to walk the stage and be a part of the celebrations since the institute held only e-convocations in the past two years due to COVID-19.
