IIT BHU to probe playing of Bhojpuri songs during Independence Day celebration
A video has surfaced on social media showing students of IIT BHU dancing to vulgar Bhojpuri songs after the flag hoisting on August 15, a probe has been ordered by the institute.
The Indian Institute of Technology - Banaras Hindu University (IIT BHU) has established an investigation team to probe into the playing of indecent Bhojpuri songs during the Independence Day celebration on August 15, 2022. The committee will submit a report to the IIT-BHU director within two weeks.
A video of the alleged incident surfaced on a social media platform and drew widespread criticism. As per reports, after the Independence Day programme ended and when teachers and non-teaching staff left the Gymkhana ground of the institute, some students linked the music system to their mobile phones and played these Bhojpuri songs and started dancing.
IIT-BHU Registrar Rajan Srivastava said on Tuesday, “We came to know of some objectionable behaviour through the media. We have constituted an internal committee to look into the allegations,” as reported by Indian Express.
An official of the IIT BHU said that as soon as staff come to know of this, they switched off the music system and asked the youths to leave the venue.
“Some of the songs may have been objectionable for the occasion. But a few people were behind the incident… it should not be associated with the institute. Earlier in the day, patriotic songs were played and students paid their respects to the national flag and the country,” said the official.
“There were some outsiders present at the event as it was a flag-hoisting programme and there is no restriction on anyone attending such a function. So, the objectionable songs may have been played by some outsiders too. All that will become clear during the probe,” added the official.
