IIT Bombay constitutes committee for PwD students cell
The committee has been given the responsibility of preparing and maintaining the guidelines/polices for students and faculty based on Indian laws.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has constituted a committee for PwD students cell at the institute. Welcoming the IIT Bombay’s move, the Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle (APPSC), a student group, hoped “that the cell can ensure that 5 per cent reservation for PwD students and faculty is implemented henceforth”.
As per a circular released by the institute, there are a number of students with disabilities (PwD) on the IIT campus and they are facing a variety of challenges in their day-to-day life and in academics. To address issues faced by such students, a cell has been created. The term of student members will be one year, while that of faculty/staff will be three years. The term may be extended as required in the either case, the circular added.
Role and responsibilities of PwD students cell
- Preparation and maintenance of guidelines/polices for students and faculty based on Indian laws, paying special attention to academic evaluation. The guidelines prepared by the members of the cell are to be approved by the IIT Bombay Director before implementation.
- Organisination of orientation and awareness sessions for students and faculty, including online sessions to prepare students after admission and before they physically join the institute.
- Redressal of grievances of PwD students in a time-bound manner, as per the policies to be evolved by the cell.
- Creation of support systems, including mentorship and other assistance, and website for guidance of PwD students.
- Audit of facilities and policies of the institute with respect to their impact on PwD students.
