The student racing team of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has won the overall winner position at the Formula Student UK 2021 competition.

Formula Student is a student engineering competition held annually in the UK. Student teams from around the world design, build, test, and race a small-scale formula-style racing car. It is Europe’s most established educational engineering competition. Backed by industry and high-profile engineers such Patron, Ross Brawn OBE, the competition aims to develop enterprising and innovative young engineers and encourage more young people to take up a career in engineering.

IIT Bombay beats 65 teams in virtual concept class contest

The IIT Bombay team participated in the concept class competition along with 65 other teams from 18 countries. The contest was meant for teams that could not travel and had only static (virtual) events.

The race is held at the Silverstone circuit in England. However, with journey restrictions to the UK as a result of Covid-19 pandemic, the student team from IIT Bombay participated in the contest virtually for the second consecutive year.

“We couldn’t go to the UK for dynamic events, so we took part in the concept class competition, which was meant for teams that couldn’t travel and had only static (virtual) events,” said Asit Karmakar, assistant supervisor of the racing team at IIT Bombay.

Apart from the win in the overall category, the team also topped the design event of the competition, beating 64 teams from 18 countries. The team defended its title in the category last year.
