IIT Delhi Partners with DRDO to Launch ABHED Lightweight Bulletproof Jackets

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has developed lightweight bulletproof jackets named ABHED (Advanced Ballistics for High Energy Defeat). These innovative jackets were created at the DRDO Industry Academia Centre of Excellence (DIA-CoE) at IIT Delhi.

These jackets are made from advanced polymers and indigenous boron carbide ceramic materials. The design configuration is informed by the characterization of various materials under high strain rates, followed by appropriate modelling and simulation in collaboration with DRDO.

The armour plates for the jackets have successfully passed all required R&D trials by established protocols. These jackets meet the highest threat levels and are lighter than the maximum weight limits specified in the General Staff Qualitative Requirements of the Indian Army. Weighing as little as 8.2 kg and 9.5 kg for different BIS levels, these modular-design jackets feature front and rear armour to provide comprehensive 360-degree protection. Based on the selection-criteria matrix, some Indian industries were shortlisted for the Transfer of Technology and handholding. The Centre is ready to transfer the technology to three industries.

Congratulating DIA-CoE on the achievement, Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO Dr Samir V Kamat stated that the Light Weight Bullet Proof Jacket exemplifies the effective ecosystem of successful defence R&D by DRDO, academia and the industry.

The DIA-CoE was established in 2022 by transforming the Joint Advanced Technology Center of DRDO at IIT Delhi to foster collaboration between industry and academia for defence R&D. Since its inception, it has been actively engaged in various projects focused on advanced technologies, bringing together DRDO scientists, academic researchers, and industry partners.
