The new director of the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad, Professor B.S. Murty has set a target of Rs 200 crore per year to fund the research activity of the institute by the year 2024. At present, the research funding stands at Rs 50 crore a year. He wants to upgrade the level of the institute nationally as well as internationally. Currently, it ranks 8th in the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2019 of the MHRD in the 'Engineering Institutions' Category. The institute also aims to break into the top 400 international institutions. He launched the β€œIIT Hyderabad's Vision for 2024” on the campus.

Some other key highlights of the RoadMap to Vision 2024 comprise rising the number of industries at IIT Hyderabad Research park to 40 from 5, surge the number of startups nurtured by the institute to over 50 from 20, double the faculty strength to 400, and surge student strength to 5,000 from current 2,850. The Institute is also concentrated on consolidating industry networking by means of plans such as industry projects for MTech/Ph.D. students, semester-long B.Tech internship (6th semester) and compulsory industry lectures.

IIT Hyderabad will also be initiating a new wing named the 'Department of Management and Entrepreneurship'. This will focus on boosting students to become job generators through entrepreneurial undertakings. The institute is also consolidating other connections consisting of those with alumni by means of alumni meet and alumni awards, rising the visiting faculty and global workshops. An E-Summit was held in January 2020 to motivate the students to take up Entrepreneurship.
