IITG prof featured in Vigyan Prasar's book '75 Scientists Shaping Today's India'
Prof Biman B Mandal has been working in the domain of ‘regenerative medicine and tissue engineering’, which is an interdisciplinary translational research domain that deals with the body’s ability to repair, heal and regenerate.
Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati's ((IITG) Prof Biman B Mandal, a DST SwarnaJayanti Fellow, has been recognised by Vigyan Prasar among '75 Scientists Shaping Today's India'. Vigyan Prasar is an autonomous organisation under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, whose principal objective s to serve India’s science popularisation agenda.
Coffee-table book
Union Minister Jitendra Singh released the coffee-table book published by Vigyan Prasar titled “75 under 50: Scientists Shaping Today's India” on National Science Day. The book explores the personal lives and professional accomplishments of 75 scientists, providing an in-depth look at the diversity surrounding them, such as their differing backgrounds, reasons for becoming scientists, obstacles they faced and their work in different disciplines. Prof Mandal has been working in the domain of ‘regenerative medicine and tissue engineering’, which is an interdisciplinary translational research domain that deals with the body’s ability to repair, heal and regenerate.
The field has tremendous applicability being directly associated with human health, welfare and has the potential to contribute towards addressing an unmet world problem related to ‘organ shortages’. Prof Mandal’s team has so far published 160 research articles in journals, filed 23 patents, and licensed three technologies with one product in the market.
SwarnaJayanti Fellowship awardee
Prof Mandal was awarded the SwarnaJayanti Fellowship by Department of Science and Technology for the 2019-2020 year in 'Life Science' category for his notable research in the area of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine. Under this scheme, selected young scientists with a proven track record are provided assistance and support to enable them to pursue research in frontier areas of science and technology.
