JEE Main Result 2024 Announced: Know admission process at NITs, IIITs after qualifying JEE
Candidates after qualifying JEE mains examination, have a plethora of options to choose from for their further studies without writing JEE advance examination. Candidates can get admission to prestigious institutes such as NITs, IIITs, and other GFTIs. If you are here, you must have appeared or planned to appear in JEE mains examination. JEE Mains exam is the first and foremost criteria to get admission into NITs, IIITs or other GFTIs. JEE Mains is the single most important key to the doors of 23 IITs, 31 NITs, 26IIITs and other premier government-funded technical institutes such as AKTU (APJ Abdul Kalam Technical university),
To get admission to IITs, NITs or other GFTIs, candidates must appear in the JEE mains examination. Once JEE main examination is completed, every candidate willing to get admission to these premier institutes must participate in JOSAA counselling process. JOSAA is a common gateway for JEE candidates to admission to NITs, IITs and other GFTIs.
Candidates who have appeared for JEE mains can fill JOSAA counselling form, doesn’t matter if they qualify Mains or not.
After the completion of all rounds of JOSAA counseling, CSAB also conducts 2 special rounds of counseling for JEE Mains-qualified candidates.
What is JOSAA?
JOSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) is a single platform which handles the joint seat allocation for admissions in over 100 institutes, such as IITs, NITs, IIITs, and Other-Government Funded Technical Institutes (Other-GFTIs).
Every eligible candidate must register him/herself on the JOSAA website to take part in the counseling process of IITs, NITs and other GFTIs.
Eligibility Criteria for JOSAA Counseling Process
- Candidate should either 12th passed or 12th appearing. (Passed 12th should be within 2 years of admission year).
- Candidates must have secured a minimum 75% aggregate in class 12th or should be within the top 20 % students in their board exams. (For SC, ST candidates, criteria will be 65% aggregate).
- Candidates who appeared in JEE mains exams, but were not qualified for JEE advanced can opt for all institutes other than IITs.
- Candidates who appeared in JEE mains exams, and qualified JEE advanced can opt for all institutes including IITs.
All eligible candidates can register in the official JOSAA portal for counseling to get admission to NITs, IITs, and other GFTIs.
JOSAA counseling steps
JOSAA counselling process allows candidates to take admission to NITs or IIITs other GFTIs through JEE Mains. JOSAA counselling process consists of several important stages. These stages include registration, choice filling seat allocation and other important aspects.
JOSAA counseling process: Registration
JEE MAINS Candidates need to register themselves on the JOSAA portal to show the availability of candidature for vacant seats in NITs, IIITs and other GFTIs. Candidates need to fill in the required details for registration. Steps for new candidate registration on JOSAA portal are given here:
- Visit the official website: josaa.nic.in
- Click on the “New candidate registration” tab
- Fill in all the required details:
- JEE Mains roll number
- Candidate’s name
- Candidate’s father's Name
- Candidate’s Date of Birth [DOB]
JOSAA will authenticate the details, after successful authentication, the Candidate will create a password for later reference & submit the registration form. A confirmation Email and SMS will be sent to candidate’s device for verification of communication details.
Candidates will use the registration password and roll number for sign-in and complete further steps.
JOSAA counseling process: Choice filling
Candidates must fill in the choices as per their willingness and all-India rank. after signing in, Candidate will be able to option of choice filling out of available choices. If candidate have not qualified JEE mains IITs seats will not be in available choice.

Candidates must know candidates can fill as many choices as they want within the available choices. Candidates should fill this choice based on their all-India rank.
JOSAA counseling process: Mock seat allotment & choice locking
JOSAA allows candidates to check their probable seat according to their ranks based on previous year trends and data. Candidates can check their best possible options within the AIR based on previous year data using JOSAA mock seat allotment feature. Mock seat allotment allows candidates to take better decisions about their choice filling.
Candidates after attempting mock seat allotment, can rearrange their preference as per their requirement. Candidates need to lock their preferences or else after closing date choices will be locked by JOSAA automatically.
JOSAA counseling process: Seat allotment rounds & result
JOSAA will conduct a total 6 rounds of seat allotment for admission to IITs, NITs and other GFTIs except IITs based on JEE mains scores. Seats will be allocated to the candidates based on their ranks obtained in JEE Mains. Candidate will have the option to either accept the allotted seat in that round or opt for further rounds of seat allotment until he/she is not satisfied with the seat allotment till 6th round.
JOSAA offers three choices to candidates namely Freeze, float and slide
- Freeze
If you select “Freeze” option, It means you have accepted the present offer of seat allocation in that round.
- Float
If you select “Float” option, it means you can accept this offer and want to participate in upcoming rounds for better opportunity.
- Slide
If you select “Slide", it means you can accept the offer and want to participate in upcoming rounds for better opportunity in the same institute.
Candidate selects the best possible seat allocated in various rounds of counseling. After choosing the desired seat, the candidate must pay the acceptance fee and submit the required document for verification.
JOSAA counseling process: Seat acceptance fees.
Candidates who accept the offer, after seat allotment must pay seat acceptance fee (SAF) prescribed by the institute. Seat acceptance fees for general, EWS, and OBC candidates will be 35000 and for SC/ST and PwD candidates will be 15000.
JOSAA counseling process: Document verification
Candidates after successfully completing the seat allotment process will report to their respective NITs, IIITs or any other GFTIs as per seat allotment. Institute will require all important document as per the instruction for document verification.
After successful document verification candidates will be given final document verification letter that will be required at the time of reporting.
Documents required at the time of document verification:
- Registration cum locked choices for seat allotment
- JOSAA provisional seat allotment letter.
- Candidate undertaking certificate
- Seat acceptance fee receipt
- 10th and 12th marksheet cum certificate.
- Caste/Category certificate (If required)
- Domicile certificate (If required)
- Medical certificate
- 2 passport-size photographs
