Now, engineering, pharmacy, MBA and MCA colleges will be allowed to appoint distinguished professionals in the relevant field with no mandatory PhD clause as faculty members.

Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad (JNTUH) has decided to introduce the Professor of Practice concept from this academic year. With this, engineering, pharmacy, MBA and MCA colleges will be allowed to appoint distinguished professionals in the relevant field with no mandatory PhD clause as faculty members, Telangana Today reported.

What is Professor of Practice concept?

Professor of Practice is a faculty position which can be filled by industry and professional experts even without formal academic qualifications. According to guidelines issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Up to 10 per cent of the sanctioned posts in a higher education institution can be Professors of Practice, who will have a maximum tenure of four years. Eligible candidates must be “distinguished experts who have made remarkable contributions in their professions” in areas ranging from science and technology and social sciences to media and armed forces among others, with at least 15 years of service or experience.

The initiative by the university will come in handy for colleges which otherwise find it difficult to identify faculty members with requisite academic credentials for conducting classes in newly introduced courses such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science and robotics.

The university is in talks with the industry to identify experts who can teach in the colleges,” JNTUH Registrar Prof M Manzoor Hussain said. Apart from teaching, the colleges can involve Professors of Practice in the development and designing of courses and curriculum besides introducing new courses and delivering lectures.
