Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan released the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings 2021 on September 9 online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has created a history by becoming the best ranking Indian institute for the third time in a row. The institute has been ranked number one in India in both 'Overall' and 'Engineering' category in NIRF Rankings 2021. IIT Madras had scored 83.88 and 85.31 in the NIRF 2019 and NIRF 2020 rankings, respectively.

8 IITs, 2 NITs in top 10 list of engineering colleges

The first eight positions in the top 10 NIRF engineering ranking list 2021 were bagged by IITs. IIT Madras, Delhi, Bombay, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee, Guwahati and Hyderabad were in the top 10 spots. Two National Institute of Technology (NITs) have also made it to the list. NIT Tiruchirappalli and NIT Surathkal have bagged the ninth and tenth positions in the NIRF engineering 2021 list, respectively.

The NIRF was launched by the Minister for Education on September 29, 2015. NIRF rankings are released annually to recognise top universities, colleges and other educational institutions across India. The rankings have been made for 10 categories -- Overall, University, Management, College, Pharmacy, Medical, Engineering, Architecture, ARIIA (Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements), Research and Law.

NIRF adjudges the institutes across the country based on several parameters, including teaching, learning, and resources (TLR), research and professional practice (RP), graduation outcomes (GO), outreach and inclusivity (OI), peer perception. Each parameter has sub-parameters as well.
