NIT Hamirpur Student's Death: Drug Kingpin held, says Police

In case of the death of M.Tech student of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Hamirpur, a drug kingpin has been arrested, as said by police.

The kingpin has been identified as Ravi Chopra. He ws arrested on late Tuesday night and booked under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for culpable homicide besides sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act after 1.60 gram of 'chitta', a form of adulterated heroin, was recovered from his possession, Superintendent of Police Akriti Sharma said, as reported by Devdiscourse.

Chopra is the kingpin of drugs in Hamirpur. This is the seventh case registered against him under the NDPS Act, added police.

The Background

The incident happened amid the NIT annual festival, “Hill Fair”. The student reportedly died after partying at night. Earlier, 5 people were held in the case including four students of NIT and another student doing BEd. They were booked under the the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act for distributing ‘chitta,’.

The probe also revealed that Rajat Sharma, one of the seven accused arrested earlier in connection with the death, had links with Chopra and both had done dealings worth lakhs of rupees in the past 20 days.

Recently, NIT management has banned two girl students from living in the hostels here as they were found drunk while entering the institute two days ago.

Moreover, during the 14th convocation of the NIT held recently, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur had raised the failure of the institute in handling the drug-elated activities.
