Over 10,000 teaching posts vacant in Central Universities, IITs and IIMs

Education Minister has instructed education institutions to fill up all vacant posts in a Mission Mode by September 2022

As many as 10,000 teaching posts are lying vacant in Central Universities, Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). Over 6200 faculty positions are lying vacant in central universities alone.

Minister of State for Education Subhas Sarkar speaking in the Upper House (Rajya Sabha) has informed that 3230 teaching posts are lying vacant in IITs, while there are 403 such posts vacant in IIMs.

While replying to a question by BJP Member of Parliament, Sushil Kumar Modi, on whether the provisions of the reservation have been relaxed in IITs and IIMs, Minister of State in the Education Subhas Sarkar informed that all higher educational institutions functioning under the administrative control of the Ministry of Education have been instructed to fill reserved category faculty positions in mission mode.

As many as 13,782 non-teaching posts are vacant in central universities, 4182 in IITs and 543 in IIMs.

Sarkar informed that occurrence of vacancies and filling up of posts is a continuous process and institutions publish rolling/need-based advertisements to fill the vacant position following the due process.
Ministry of Education time to time instructed institutions to follow the provisions of the reservation to fill the vacancies, including the vacancies of SC/ST/OBC/EWS.

“All Higher Educational Institutions functioning under the administrative control of the Ministry of Education have been instructed to fill faculty positions that are lying vacant especially in the SC/ST/OBC/EWS category in their institutions, by way of a special drive and in a Mission Mode manner within a period of one year starting from 5th September 2021 to 4th September, 2022,” Sarkar said.
