Over 4 lakh Engineering seats remained vacant in 2021-22; Total sanctioned seats down by 2 lakh

The number of engineering seats in the country has also gone down by over two lakhs, from 14.65 lakh in 2017-18 to 12.53 lakh in 2021-22.

Out of the total sanctioned engineering seats in the country, one-third remained vacant in 2021-22. However, the situation in the past four years has improved as in 2017-18 nearly half of the total sanctioned B.Tech seats went vacant.

As many as 4 lakh 21 thousand B.Tech, B.E. seats could not be filled in the year 2021-22 in various engineering colleges in the country, out of the total sanctioned 12 lakh 53 thousand seats. The number of engineering seats in the country has also gone down by over two lakhs, from 14.65 lakh in 2017-18 to 12.53 lakh in 2021-22.

As per the data shared by the Union Ministry of Education, the situation has improved in the past four years as in 2017-18, more than 7 lakh 22 thousand seats were vacant out of the total sanctioned 14 lakh 65 thousand seats.

In the year 2018-19; around 6.79 lakh seats were vacant, in 2019-20 the number was over 5.87 lakhs, which further improved during the pandemic year 2020-21 to 5.66 lakh, the next year it saw a major improvement to 4.21 lakh.

Replying to a question on the number of seats available and vacant seats for undergraduate engineering students in the last five years in the country, Minister of State for Education, Dr. Subhas Sarkar in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha informed that the filling up of seats in engineering institutes is dependent on the demand-supply situation which is dependent on the location of the institutes, academic and infrastructural facilities therein and the placement opportunities.
