Requesting protesting students to call off their strike, Telangana Forest Minister Allola Indrakaran Reddy assured that he would strive hard for resolving the challenges being faced by students at Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge and Technologies (RGUKT)-Basar.

Indrakaran has advised students not to worry over poor amenities at the institution. The minister in a statement has promised to bring the issues to the notice of state Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and to make efforts to address the problems at the earliest.

Earlier on Tuesday, more than about 8,000 students of the university, also known as IIIT Basara, located at Basara town in the Nirmal district boycotted classes and launched an indefinite protest, demanding a visit of CM K Chandrashekhar Rao. The students staged a sit-in in front of the administrative block of the institution.

Students of IIIT Basara are protesting over the poor quality of food being served, lack of facilities, and demanding improvement of other basic amenities and also appointing a regular vice-chancellor.

They have alleged that the food being served in the hostel mess is of poor quality and on several occasions, small insects and frogs were found in the hostel food.

Education minister Sabitha Indra Reddy also held a meeting with the vice-chancellor and has assured them that all issues will be resolved as soon as possible.

The students have also got support from political parties, with Member of Parliament, Revanth Reddy sharing their concern on Twitter as he wrote: “There are no minimum facilities. No dining, or accommodation. Where there should be 169 professors, there are only 15 regulars. VC is not original. This is the latest situation in Triple IT, the mother of student Basara Saraswati. KCRAremo is busy working to uplift the country!!”

State National Students Union of India (NSUI), President, Venkat Balmoor also visited campus in support of the ongoing protest.

One of the students talking about their challenges stated that they were not getting newspapers in the library, which also lacked a sufficient number of books. They alleged that the academic blocks and hostels were not properly managed, causing inconvenience.

The agitating students stated that the seat intake increased drastically, but the infrastructure remained the same. The students are also demanding the IIIT maintain adequate teacher-student ratio, besides appointing physical directors.

The students have warned that they would continue their protest until the Chief Minister arrives at the campus and gives assurance to address the deficiencies.
