The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, graced the centenary celebration of the ICAR-National Institute of Secondary Agriculture (NISA) in Ranchi, Jharkhand. In her address, the President highlighted three major challenges facing agriculture in the 21st century: maintaining food and nutrition security, sustainable resource use, and combating climate change. She emphasized that secondary agriculture activities, such as value addition to primary agricultural products, beekeeping, poultry farming, and agricultural tourism, can help address these challenges.

The President noted that agricultural waste can be effectively utilized through secondary agriculture, turning it into valuable products that not only protect the environment but also enhance farmers’ incomes. She noted that lac, primarily produced by the tribal community in India, is a crucial source of their income. She was pleased that the National Institute of Secondary Agriculture has made significant strides in research and commercial development of lac, natural resins, and gums. These efforts include creating small-scale and integrated lac processing units, developing lac-based paints, varnishes, and cosmetics, and using lac coatings to extend the shelf-life of fruits, vegetables, and spices. She expressed confidence that these initiatives will help uplift the living standards of the tribal community.

The President stated that we are living in an era of disruptive technologies, which we must leverage while being mindful of their potential side effects. She was pleased to note the establishment of the Automation and Plant Engineering Division at NISA, which focuses on developing robotics, Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence-enabled equipment.
