QS World University Rankings 2023: IISc Best Ranked Indian University; IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi among top 200

8 IITs are among the top 500 universities in the World with IISc Bangalore also emerging as the global leader in the Citations per Faculty, scoring 100 in Faculty Citation

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) and IIT Delhi, the three Institutions of Eminence (IoE) have once again figured among the top 200 universities in the world, in the QS World University Rankings 2023 announced today. 41 Indian universities have been ranked this year with IITs dominating the table.

IISc Bangalore has moved ahead of IIT Bombay this year and has been ranked as the best institution from India at 155 with an overall score of 49.5 The IISc has once again scored 100 in Citation per Faculty parameter.

IIT Bombay is the second-best university from India and has been ranked 172, it was ranked 177 in 2022. IIT Delhi is the third institution from India among the top 200 in the world and has consistently improved its ranking in the past few years from 193 in 2021 Rankings to 185 in 2022, this year it has been ranked 174.

41 Universities from India

A total of 41 universities from India have been ranked this year which was 35 in the 2022 Rankings and 28 in the 2021 World University Rankings. Of these, twelve improve, twelve remain stable, ten decline, and seven are new entries. The Indian Institute of Science (155th globally) is the new national leader. Remarkably, it is also the global leader in the Citations per Faculty indicator, which QS uses to evaluate the impact of the research produced by universities.

Furthermore, IISc Bengaluru is the fastest rising South Asian university among the QS World University Rankings top-200, having gained thirty-one places year on year. All the featured Indian institutes of technology (IIT) improved their standing, a testimony to the strength and success of the Indian public technological research university model.

Indian universities including the IITs have scored poorly in International Faculty and International Student criteria, thus affecting their overall score.

Nine Indian universities have figured among the top 500 universities in the world which was eight last year. IIT Indore has figured among the top 500 this year and has been ranked at 400.

All the IITs have improved upon their rankings this year compared to the 2022 and 2021 rankings. The Indian Institute of Technology Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati all have retained their rank among the top 500 in the world.

Once again None of the multidisciplinary universities has been ranked among the top 500, the University of Delhi (DU) once again being ranked at 534, slipping from its last year’s rank in the band of 501-510.

Among the other public institutions being ranked in this year’s QS World University Rankings are Savitribai Phule Pune University, University of Madras, Anna University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Jadavpur University, University of Hyderabad, Jamia Millia Islamia and Pondicherry University.

Ben Sowter, QS Senior Vice President, said: “This edition of the QS World University Rankings reflects the excellent work that several Indian universities are doing to improve their research footprint, with positive consequences for their reputation on the global stage. Conversely, our dataset also suggests that the Indian higher education sector still struggles to provide adequate teaching capacity. Further expansion of provision – both within universities and across the sector as a whole – will be necessary if India is to continue reaching new heights.”

Indian universities continue to struggle with QS’ measure of institutional teaching capacity. Thirty of India’s 41 ranked universities have suffered declines in QS’ Faculty/Student Ratio (FSR) indicator, with only four recording improvements. However, on an encouraging note, now two Indian universities rank among the top 250 for Faculty/Student Ratio, compared to none in previous editions. The highest performing in this metric is Savitribai Phule Pune University (225^th for FSR) and O.P. Jindal Global University (235^th for FSR), followed by IISs Bengaluru (276^th for FSR).

OP Jindal, Manipal among top 1000

Among the private universities O. P. Jindal Global University and Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Chandigarh University and Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences have been ranked among the top 500-1000 in the world.

Professor C. Raj Kumar, Founding Vice-Chancellor of O.P. Jindal Global University said: “To be featured among the top 700 best universities around the world is a matter of tremendous significance for JGU. JGU has improved its global rankings this year on the back of its excellent faculty-student ratio, employer reputation and international faculty ratio.”

US-UK varsities among top 10

American and British universities dominate the ranking with nine out of the top 10 in the world being from these two nations. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has retained its top position followed by the University of Cambridge, Stanford University, University of Oxford and Harvard University being top five.

Quacquarelli Symonds uses six parameters to rank institutions which include Academic Reputation (40%), Employer Reputation (10%), Faculty/Student Ratio (20%), Citations per faculty (20%), International Faculty Ratio (5%) and International Student Ratio (5%).
